Carrowmoreknock is about 12 Irish miles from Galway and six from Oughterard. It consists of 555 acres and runs along Lough Corrib for about 2  miles. It is in the Parish of Kilcummin and the Barony of Moycullen and the electoral district of Wormhole. The barony of Moycullen was formed from the old Irish districts of Gnomore and Gnobeag. Carrowmoreknock was in *Gnobeag and its first appearance in a map appears to be in Pettys map of Ireland in the 1600s. Before 1641 Spephen Martin was the landowner. In 1641 some of it changed hands. Robert Martin acquired 192 acres and George Bingham  of Castlebar, brother of the Governer of Connaught acquired 14 acres.
* Gnobeag ran from the Aille river in the west to the shores of Lough Corrib, with the top of Ross lake (formerly Lough Lonan)  forming the northern boundary according to John O'Donovan but there others who dispute this view.
